A beautiful sweater with a button-up twist 🧶

The Mina Sweater Pattern by Sandnes is a beautifully wearable top-down sweater with a rather clever detail that sets it apart from the usual knitted jumper. Worked in Peer Gynt held together with a strand of fluffy mohair, it creates a soft, warm fabric with a lovely halo, while the decorative button detail running along one shoulder and into the neckline adds a little something extra.

The sweater is worked from the neck down, beginning with the back and shaped with turning rows to create gently sloping shoulders. The fronts are then worked separately before being joined, with the body continuing downwards and finished with ribbing. The sleeves are picked up around the armholes and knitted in the round in stocking stitch, with ribbed cuffs.

And then there's that button detail. The button band continues from the shoulder into the neckband, creating a lovely feature that gives the sweater a slightly more interesting, considered look without making it feel fussy. You'll need 6 buttons to complete the design.

We love the combination of Peer Gynt and mohair here. Peer Gynt gives the sweater structure, warmth and durability, while the fluffy mohair adds softness and a beautiful light halo. It's a combination that feels cosy without being heavy, making this the sort of sweater you can imagine wearing constantly once it's off the needles.

A classic shape with a little extra something

The Mina Sweater is designed to be a really wearable everyday garment, but the shoulder and neckline detail gives it enough personality to stop it feeling like just another plain jumper. Choose complementary shades for a subtle tonal effect, or go for a bit more contrast between your Peer Gynt and mohair to make the fluffy texture stand out.

The original Sandnes pattern uses one strand of Peer Gynt together with one strand of Tynn Silk Mohair. For our version, we're recommending Rico Super Kid Mohair Silk as the mohair substitute. Rico Super Kid Mohair Silk comes in 25g balls with approximately 200 metres per ball, and gives you the soft, fluffy mohair-and-silk effect we're after.

As with any yarn substitution, we recommend knitting a tension square and checking your meterage before starting. Sandnes also advises checking yarn length when using an alternative yarn, as substitutions can change the finished look and feel of the garment.

The pattern is rated Medium, so it's best suited to knitters who already have some garment-making experience. You'll be working increases, shaping, turning rows and the rather lovely double-knitted button band, so there's enough going on to keep things interesting without it becoming a knitting marathon.
