Sandnes Ballerina Chunky Yarn

We are absolutely smitten with Sandnes Ballerina Chunky, and once you get it on your needles, we think you will be too! If you’ve been searching for that iconic, soft-focus "halo" that makes hand-knitted treasures look so high-end and inviting, this is the yarn for you. It’s a classic, dreamy blend of mohair and wool that manages to be incredibly light and fluffy while packing a serious punch when it comes to warmth.

What we really love about this range is just how versatile it is. You can knit it all on its own for a delicate, airy fabric that’s perfect for summer evenings, or hold it together with another yarn to add a luxurious, fuzzy texture to your favourite jumper pattern. Whether you’re a total beginner looking for a quick, satisfying scarf project or a seasoned pro planning a complex cardigan, Sandnes Ballerina Chunky is a joy to work with. It glides beautifully over the needles and creates a fabric that is simply divine against the skin.

At Gilliangladrag, we’re quite picky about what we stock in the Fluff-a-torium, but Sandnes Ballerina Chunky ticked every single one of our boxes. We know that as makers, you care about the story behind your materials just as much as we do. That’s why we’re so pleased to share that this yarn is STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified. It’s been tested for harmful substances, meaning you can knit away with total peace of mind, knowing your finished piece is as kind to your skin as it is beautiful to look at.

How to use your Ballerina Chunky

We often get asked in the shop how best to use this fluffy wonder. The beauty of Sandnes Ballerina Chunky lies in its adaptability:

  • The Single Strand: Use a 5mm to 7mm needle to create an ethereal, see-through lace effect that weighs almost nothing.
  • The Double Trouble: Hold two strands together for a chunkier, more opaque fabric that is exceptionally cosy.
  • The "Second Thread" Trick: Carry a strand of Ballerina alongside a 4-ply or DK wool. It’s a brilliant way to add a bit of "ooh-factor" and a lovely fuzzy halo to a standard woolly project.

Tips for working with Mohair

If you’re a bit nervous about working with mohair for the first time, don’t be! Because this is a "chunky" weight mohair, it’s much easier to handle than its laceweight cousins. We recommend using smooth wooden or bamboo needles if you find the yarn a bit slippery, as they offer just a tiny bit more "grip" to help you keep your tension even.

The yardage is surprisingly generous, too—at approximately 135 metres per 50g ball, you’ll find that a little goes a very long way. We’ve curated a range of colours that we think are just perfect for a handmade wardrobe, from soft neutrals to pops of brighter shades. So, put the kettle on, find a comfy spot, and let’s get making something wonderfully fuzzy!
