Sandnes Double Sunday DK

We are absolutely smitten with Sandnes Double Sunday, and it’s easy to see why it has become such a superstar in the making world. This is the thickest version of Sandnes’ 100% merino wool, and because it hasn't been superwash treated, it retains that lovely, authentic "woolly" feel that we adore. It has a beautiful, plump structure that gives your stitches a wonderful definition, making even a simple bit of stockinette look like a professional, high-end piece of knitwear.

What makes this yarn a real hero in our stash is its sheer versatility. You can knit it on its own with a single thread for a classic, bouncy finish, or double it up for a chunkier, more substantial look. And if you’re feeling a bit fancy? Try knitting it together with a strand of Thin Silk Mohair to add a delicate, fuzzy halo—it’s a combination that we think is a total game-changer for those cosy cardigans and jumpers we all love to live in.

At Gilliangladrag, we’re quite picky about our merino, but Double Sunday ticked every single one of our boxes. We know that as makers, you want your hard work to be practical as well as beautiful, and this yarn really delivers. Merino wool is a bit of a wonder-fibre; not only is it incredibly insulating and warm, but it also wicks moisture away and can hold up to 30% of its weight in water before it even starts to feel damp! This makes it the perfect choice for everything from hard-wearing adult garments to soft-as-a-cloud baby clothes and accessories.

Why non-superwash matters

We often chat in the shop about the benefits of non-superwash wool. By keeping the yarn natural and avoiding the chemical coating used in superwash treatments, the wool stays "puckered" and plump. This means your garments keep their shape better over time and have a more authentic, matte finish. It’s a bit kinder to the planet and a lot kinder to your needles! Because it hasn't been treated, we do recommend a gentle wool cycle or a hand wash to keep your finished pieces looking their best for years to come.

Perfect for every skill level

Whether you’re a beginner looking for a reliable yarn that won't split, or a confident pro planning a complex cabled masterpiece, Double Sunday is a dream to work with. It glides over the needles (we recommend a 3.5mm to 4mm) and creates a fabric that is soft enough for the most sensitive skin.

It’s also the go-to yarn for many of our favourite designers, including PetiteKnit, so you’ll never be short of pattern inspiration. From simple beanies and scarves to intricate top-down sweaters, this yarn is a steady, reliable companion for your making journey. We’ve curated a range of shades that we think are just perfect—from classic neutrals that go with everything to pops of colour that brighten up the greyest of days. Grab a few balls, put the kettle on, and enjoy the simple joy of working with truly excellent wool.
