How much wooltop "yarn" you'll need depends on your project, but here's a rough guide:

1kg of merino wooltops is generally enough for a scarf or a small cushion.

2kg of merino wooltops will create a giant floor cushion front, a small throw, or a small rug.

3kg of merino wooltops will make a slightly larger blanket, throw, or rug.

And 5kg of merino wooltops should be sufficient for a large, snuggly blanket or throw.

Remember that the final dimensions will vary depending on the size of your hook (or needles, if you're tempted by giant knitting!), and also your own personal tension. I always try to keep my tension as loose as possible, as this allows for easier shaping at the end.

Care:
